Step 2: Financial Model Starts with Investment

Find out how many trucks are necessary to generate $500K per year. If you want to invest your own money then just enter the figure in equity cell of the spreadsheet. If you wish to take a loan for N number of years with X% of interest then just enter the figures and the model will take care of everything.

This is part of CapEx where we have provided prefilled items. Dont have to waste time on finding the items. You have the option to choose between large, mid or small trucks and you can also operate with 3 types of trucks simultaneously. We have researched prices of large trucks, mid sized trucks and small trucks. The best is that you dont have to worry about if you need more or less investment based on revenue projections.

The Prices of key items such as trucks, maintenance equipments and other key investment items are well researched and already entered in the modely. So, you dont have to waste your precious time browsing countless pages on Google to find these info. However, if you think of changing any of the investment figures then you can do that as well.

Step 3: Revenue Assumptions

The revenue of your box truck business depends on how many customer you can acquire. Now there are 2 ways to acquire customers- increase marketing budget or find people organically who are willing to take our services. In our model, you can adjust for both the ways! In addition, we have included number of promotional channels which might be used by you such as website, in-person marketing, Google Ads, etc. So let’s say that you are using in-person marketing and you have 3 people on payroll to find new customers by either cold calling them or visiting them personally. Let’s say you spend $50K on salaries for these 3 people per month and on an average they are able to bring in 25 new customers every month. So, for acquiring each customer you need to spend around $2,000. In the model you can adjust these factors and find out if your business can be profitable and your cash flow can be sustainable to run your business for the long term.

Now, let’s look at the next section of revenue assumptions. It consists of revenue sources, prices, number of customers for each revenue source and other important factors related to revenue. The 3 primary revenue sources are One Time Delivery Services, Contractual Delivery Services and Special Delivery Services. In addition, some people Advertising on Box Truck so you can also use that. Please note that this totally depends on your business model. If you only offer services to contractual customers then you can you that, if you only offer one time delivery customers then you can use that or you can use all the revenue sources simultaneously. If we dig deeper then you will observe that each revenue source is divided into Long Haul, Mid Haul and Short Haul. If your business model supports different types of customers then you can adjust the model based on this.

Now let me explain how the revenue model is designed and how it’s connected to number of customers acquired in the previous section. Let’s say that you have acquired 100 customers in the 1st year. Out of these 100 customers let’s say that you have 80% contractual customers who regularly avail your services and 20% of the customers are just availing one time services. So, 80 customers will go to Contractual Delivery Services and 20 to One Time Delivery Services. In case of contractual out of the 80, lets say 50 customers are for long haul, 20 are for mid haul and 10 are for short haul. So, you can decide and customize based on your need and it will provide the objective result in terms of income statement, balance sheet and financial model.

The revenue projection is broken in terms of monthly basis, so you can get a realistic projection in terms of customers acquired, customers lost and remaining customers.

Step 4: Cost Assumptions

There are 2 types of costs- Variable and Fixed Costs. Variable Costs are costs which will change based on revenue, for e.g. if you get more customers then your trucks have to be on the road for longer which will increase your fuels cost, truck maintenance cost and other variable costs. On the other hand, fixed costs are costs which do not change with revenue, for e.g. you have to pay salaries no matter what ! It is important to differentiate between these 2 costs. According to GAAP and FASB accounting standards, these two costs are divided into Cost of Goods Sold and Operating Expenses.

Step 5: Cash Flow Assumptions

Cash Flow Assumptions consist of receivables, payables and inventory related assumptions. For e.g. if your customers are taking very long to pay back then your receivables will increase which will impact your cash flow negatively. On the other hand if you are paying your suppliers late then it will impact your cash flow positively. Also, if you have to keep a lot of inventory for truck parts or fuel or any other sort of inventory then it is going to eat up a lot of cash which will impact your cash flow negatively.

Step 5: Results

Now that you have entered every assumptions related variables so you can look at the results.

Organizational Overview

Organizational Overview helps identify overall structure of the business in terms of hierarchy and job description. This will help you identify the positions for which you need to recruit. The organogram included in the template helps your drag and drop content with ease. There are multiple pre-made designs to choose from. Change the hierarchy and structure in any way you want.

Organogram

Pick & Choose. Most likely positions and job descriptions for the box truck business has already been included. Keep what your need and delete what you dont. The need for each box truck business is different. For e.g. in case you are outsourcing production then you may not need a box truck drivers.
